True Standards of a Hero Essay Example for Free

True Standards of a Hero EssayGeorge Washington, Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali, and even Taylor Swift have been proven to be torpedoes in todays culture. Long before any of these individuals walked the Earth, the story of a man exhibiting what a true hero of expansive proportions really is. Beowulf, a poem in British literature from the eighth century, showcases the concept of real heroism. Beowulf, a Geat who provides the real qualities of a dominate hero, travels to Herot to protect the kingdom of King Hrothgar. Beowulf impart find himself battling with monsters that represent evil, the devil, and depths of Hell. The people of the kingdom are, at first, nervous of having a man fight the monster, Grendel, but are soon proven that Beowulf is the only option. The hero will later encounter the monsters mother and, fifty years later, a dominate dragon. Clearly, in Beowulf, we will watch over the true qualities of an epic hero. Beowulf will travel far distances to be glorify and viewed significantly by the entire world. He will also demonstrate Anglo-Saxon ethics in the deeds he performs using his herculean strength and abilities. Beowulf proves to people across many lands that he is a strong and responsible leader as intumesce as an example of true heroism. As the poem begins, you immediately see how Beowulf is presented with an intense quest and is signified and glorified. The reader is told how a horrific monster, Grendel, is attacking Hrothgars kingdom. Beowulf hears of the incidents and immediately travels to help. He wants to aid the kingdom, Heard how Grendel filled night with horror/ And quickly commanded a boat fitted out/ Proclaiming that hed go to that historied king (112-114). He then carries out with his promise and takes on the outstanding quest. Beowulf carries out another epic quality by being significant and glorified across many lands. When he arrives at Herot, he is greeted by Wulfgar, one of Hrothgars feudal lords. Wulfgar proclaims, M y lord, the enormous King of the Danes, commands me/ To tell you that he knows of your noble bear (127-128). This explains how highly regarded Beowulf is talked of among the area. Beowulf will, now, battle Grendel, the ferocious beast. In addition to the obvious heroic qualities, Beowulf showcases his ethics to Anglo-Saxon society and his superhuman strength. When Beowulf goes to fight the monster, he refuses to use weapons since Grendel doesnt use them. That I, alone and with the help of my men,/ May purge all evil from this hall. I have heard,/ Too, that the monsters scorn of men/ Is so great that he needs no weapons and fears no name./ Nor will I (165-169), announces Beowulf in order to prove his pride and morality. Now, though, Beowulf must give attention to showing his superhuman strength. He fights upon one tree branch, being able to detach Grendels own arm. -And was instantly seized himself, claws/ Bent back as Beowulf leaned up on one arm (430-431). As to be expected, Beow ulf murders Grendel within moments of the battle. Grendels mother is then angered by the news and is ready to fight Beowulf as well.Beowulf is, once again, prepared to encounter decease for glory, the citizens, and to reflect ideals of society. He jumps into the red, dark, deep, treacherous waters to confront Grendels mother in a battle. The water was bloody, steaming and boiling/ In grievous pounding waves, heat/ Sucked from his magical veins (529-531). Once arriving miles deep into the Hell, Beowulf was ready to boost his name once again. But Beowulf/ Longed only for fame, leaped back/ Into battle If weapons were useless hed use/ His hands, the strength in his fingers. So fame/ Comes to those who mean to win it/ And care about nothing else (605-612). This is how Beowulf reflects ideals of Anglo-Saxon society. He knows fame comes to those who thrive for it. Our hero wins the unimagined battle and returns to the surface with the head of Grendels mother. In Herot, Beowulf is prese nted the kingdom and is now the King.Fifty years later, a new crisis comes forward. A dragon is destroying the kings land Beowulf is the only known help. The king travels with twelve men, but shows his bravery by telling them to Wait for me close by, my friends,/ no man but me/ Could believe to defeat this monster (679-684). Beowulf wants to go in alone, to protect his men. While in battle, all of the men leave except for one, Wiglaf, a distant cousin to Beowulf. The highly admired hero, is defeated by the dragon. Wiglaf runs to his side, where Beowulf proclaims him as his successor. Moments after, Beowulf takes his final breath. Beowulf was clearly seen as a strong leader by his people carrying on his name in glory, And so Beowulfs followers/ Rode, mourning their beloved leader,/ Crying that no better king had ever/ Lived, no prince so mild, no man/ so open to his people, so deserving of praise (838-842). There was even a tower erected in his name. His legacy of being an epic, str ong, glorious leader is achieved.Obviously, Beowulf has association with any heroic quality under the Sun. The king was on a quest, was signifigant, and even glorified by his people. Beowulf additionally showed ethics in his battles and his superhuman abilities. He risks death carrying out ideals of Anglo-Saxon society performing these great deeds with even greater leadership. This poem clearly represented God versing evils with the good prevailing. Now we see how todays heroes find their inspiration.

The Role of Management and the Union in an Organization Essay Example for Free

The Role of Management and the Union in an Organization EssayCorporations argon beta members of the society as they atomic number 18 responsible for providing substantial in sic in terms of goods and services as well as adding to the growth of the country as a whole. The employees of a participation argon the wholly assets which do not have a monetary figure assigned to them yet the benefit accruing from the continued use of the employees is substantial. In a wide range of industries, the employees are members of trade unions which regulate the way in which organizations hire, fire and deal with employees including workplace conditions and wage rates etc. It is imperative that the organizations and the unions are aware of their roles and responsibilities be baffle a send back by either one would lead to inefficiencies with respect to corporate be given which would have a negative impact on the economy. The paper also seeks to explore various strategies which could be im plement by both the commission and the unions which would allow them to regulate themselves properly as well as encourage the trenchant functioning of a apprisalship between the management and the union. The Role of Management in an OrganizationAs per the agency principle, the management of the company is charged with the role of managing the personal matters of the company in a way which is beneficial to the recreates of the shareholders. Therefore, in order fulfill the aforementioned requirement the management is required to exercise various roles and responsibilities. match to Mintzberg, conductors within a company exercise a range of roles which can be broken down into three main categories including Interpersonal Roles As the bod suggests, managers within a company need to be good with interpersonal skills and sharing of ideas and information. The roles described under this ambit include i. Figurehead A manager must be inspirational in his conduct and should have the chara cteristics of a leader i. e. charismatic and influential so that people are able to strike to him and abide by his instructions (Mintzbergs Management, n. d. ). ii. Leader Building on the above mentioned concept, managers are to act as leaders in their capacity i. e. the identical concept applies to lower level managers and to the executives who set a tone of how the organization will solve in the future (Mintzbergs Management, n. . ). iii. Liaison A company is not a closed entity i. e. the company constantly has to interact with individuals and entities inside and immaterial the company therefore it is the function of the manager to ensure that hard-hitting and operative relations exist between all major internal and external s consequenceholders of the company (Mintzbergs Management, n. d. ).Informational Roles The managers also responsible for ensuring that adequate information is available and is streamlined throughout all relevant sections of the organization. i.Monitor The corporate environment today is constantly evolving largely due to changes like globalization and the ever so unforgiving financial constraints. In such a competitive environment, it is imperative for managers to keep a track of all changes to allow effective strategy formulation. It is also authoritative for managers to seek out patterns in internal performance and report regularly to the concerned individuals for prompt action (Cieslinska, 2007). ii. Disseminator The managers are required not only to track information but to disseminate the comparable to all the concerned people in a timely manner (Cieslinska, 2007). ii. Spokesperson Lastly, it is authorised for managers to crystalize that they represent a brand name therefore, it is outstanding for them to act in the same capacity i. e. they should be able to communicate the corporate hold dears and beliefs to the outside world in an effective and influential manner (Cieslinska, 2007).Decisional Roles Not only is it imp ortant for managers to track and communicate information but it is even more important to make proper use of the information to make informed decisions. i.Entrepreneur Within the employment capacity, it is the job of every manager to manage a trusted unit responsible for adding value to the overall corporation. Therefore. it is important for managers to have skills to resolve issues, generate innovative new ideas and assist in the effective implementation of the same (Cieslinska, 2007). ii. Disturbance Handler It is impossible that an organization would run smoothly indefinitely i. e. there are bound to be obstacles and it is the responsibility of the manager to facilitate effective corporate functioning during these times (Cieslinska, 2007). ii. Resource Allocator The resources that an organization has access to are always scarce, be it material or repulse etc. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the managers to ensure that the resources are allocated efficiently (Cieslinska, 2007). iv. Negotiator Lastly, based on the information that a manager possesses, it is important for the manager to negotiate favorable deals for the company with both internal and external stakeholders (Cieslinska, 2007).The Role of a Union in an OrganizationSince employees are probably the most important asset of the company, trade or labor unions are formed in order to safeguard the interests of the same. The primary reasons why labor unions exist is to ensure that equal opportunities for employment exist throughout the company, that the employees operate in a healthy and safe working environment and that the employees are remunerated fairly for their efforts. Among the various responsibilities of labor unions, some of the important ones are as under Wages All employees work for money and in return the employer extracts benefits through their services. It is important for organizations to realize the fact that the wages they pay should be proportionate to the value they extract f rom the employees. It is the responsibility of labor unions to ensure that wage rates are adequate considering the environmental conditions like inflation and the consumer buying power, the time value of money i. e. $1 now will not be equal to $1 after a year the labor unions today also take account of international trends with respect to labor wages in a particular intentness and their negotiations are based on the results of the said analysis (Lacoma). fitted Structure While the trade unions fight for the rights of their union members, it is important for the union itself to be structured properly i. e. the individuals who are the decisions makers and negotiators should be from among the workers, should have had an experience with how the industry operates. In addition, these members should be completely impartial from the company i. e. there should not exist any conflict of interest because the existence of the same would lead to decisions universe made which would be in the be st interests of either the industry or the employees (Lenin, 1922).A minimum of two (2) strategies/actions an organization can implement to create and state a tributary working relationship with unions Employee voice In order to maintain good relations with unions, it is important that there exists an effective employee voice in the company. The meaning of employee voice in this context is the fact that all decisions made by a company should take into account the interests of the employees. If the companies make an effort from the start, they watch themselves to negative criticism from the union itself and in fact motivate the employees to work for the company. The main reason behind the implementation of the strategy follows the premise that prevention is mend than remedy i. e. it would be much more effective if the organizations took initiatives on their own as opposed to responding to claims presented by the unions which might be hostile and might cause a rift between the orga nization and the unions. It is absolutely imperative that the management maintain trust and confidence with the union so that no animosity exists. It is important for the management to realize that the unions are highly influential in most industries and therefore it would be in the best interests of the company to act in a manner which is acceptable to the union heads (Lenin, 1922). repulse Management Committees Another effective strategy which can be implemented by the company is the formation of Labor Management Committees. These committees would contain members from both the management and the labor unions. The committee would be required to meet on a periodic basis and all issues which are sensitive to either the management or the union would be discussed in the meetings. The findings discussed in the meeting should be documented and communicated to all members concerned within the management as well as within the union. This would promote integration and encourage effective com munication between the two groups. The involvement of labor union members in corporate decision making would also be held in high regard y the employees as they would perceive that the organization actually cares about their inescapably and wants and as a result considers the observations of the unions regularly (Cain). A minimum of two (2) strategies/actions a union can implement to create and maintain a conducive working relationship with management The above mentioned strategies deal with the initiatives the management can take however it is also important to consider the initiatives which can be implemented by the union itself.Frequent Appraisals of Union Heads Within the labor unions there should be regular appraisals and evaluations of the union heads. It is important that this activity is carried out because if the unions are headed by individuals who are corrupt or are involved in collusive arrangements with the management, it would hamper the effective functioning of the un ion which would not only lead to the bolshie of confidence of the members on the functioning and credibility of the union, but would also lead to an inefficient employee employer relationship which could be devastating for the entire industry.New people should be given the opportunity to represent the union and there should be triggers in place within the union to highlight if a potential conflict of interest is likely to take place. The results of these appraisals should be communicated to the management on a timely manner so that there is a unanimously accepted practice that the unions are subject to appraisal and the individuals dealing on behalf of the union are credible and impartial individuals.Frequent Appraisals of Union Members Another effective strategy which could be implemented by trade unions is conducting an appraisal of its members working for the company and should put in place measures to combat malpractice and unethical conduct. It is important to note that the po licies enacted by the management and the practices put in place by the unions are both directed to achieve a perfect tradeoff between employee efforts and the employee remuneration. While the unions are concerned with the level and adequacy of remuneration, they should also ensure that the performance of the employees is up to the arrange and that they are actually adding value to the organization rather than merely being a liability. This is important because it would help create harmony between unions and the management because the management would perceive that the unions actually investigate instances where the employees are at fault and their malpractices and misconduct are dealt with in a timely and effective anner. As an extreme resort, the unions might even provide recommendations to the management in case they believe that an employee is not up to the mark to ensure that the skills mix within the company is as per the complexity and requirements of the concerned corporation. Therefore, it can be concluded that the management need to ensure that the voice of the employees is hear especially during strategic planning so that strategies are formulated effectively. In addition, employers also should formulate committees designed specifically to address the concerns of labor unions so that an effective working relation is created. On the flip side, the labor unions can also seek to establish strategies including conducting appraisals of both the unit heads and the members of the union to ensure that there exists no conflict of interest at the head of the union and that any misconducts by the employees are dealt with a manner which is effective and prohibits future instances. These strategies can only function properly if the management and the union are aware of their responsibilities. It is important for both parties to realize that they are important members of the corporate world and an effective working relation between the two would help promote harmony at the corporate level which would be in the best interests of the overall economy.

History of antivirus software

History of antivirus softwargonAntivirus Softw arHistory of Antivirus SoftwareThere are competing claims for the innovator of the first antivirus product. Possibly the first publicly documented removal of a data processor virus in the wild was performed by Brent Fix in 1987. An antivirus course to counter the Polish MKS virus was released in 1987. Dr. Solomons Anti- virus Toolkit, AIDSTEST and AntiVir were released by in 1988. Dr. Ahn Chul Soo (Charles Ahn, founder of AhnLab Inc) in South Korea also released the Anti-Virus software package called V1 in June 10, 1988. By late(a)ly 1990, nineteen separate antivirus products were available including Norton AntiVirus and McAfee VirusScan. Early contributors to work on ready reckoner viruses and countermeasures included Fred Cohen, Peter Tippett, and John McAfee. Before lucre connectivity was wide go around, viruses were typically spread by septic floppy harrows. Antivirus software came into use, but was updated relatively infrequ ently. During this time, virus checkers essentially had to check executable files and the boot sectors of floppy and hard disks. However, as internet usage became common, initially through the use of modems, viruses spread throughout the meshing.Powerful macros used in word processor applications, such as smallsoft Word, presented a merely risk. Virus writers flummoxed using the macros to write viruses embedded within documents. This meant that electronic computers could now also be at risk from infection by documents with hidden attached macros as programs.Later electronic mail programs, in particular Microsoft Outlook Express and Outlook, were vulnerable to viruses embedded in the email body itself. Now, a users computer could be infected by just opening or previewing a message. This meant that virus checkers had to check many to a greater extent display cases of files. As always-on broadband connectednesss became the norm and more and more viruses were released, it becam e essential to update virus checkers more and more frequently. Even then, a impudently zero-day virus could become widespread before antivirus companies released an update to protect against it.What is an Antivirus program? An antivirus program is used as a security measure and aegis tool against computer viruses. The job of an antivirus program is to scan, let out and pr tied(p)t viruses. non all antivirus programs can perform these basic tasks, but this get out be discussed later on in this publish.Antivirus programs are an essential tool you must suck up installed on your computer or network. Antivirus programs offer real-time, on- vex and on-demand protection for your computer. The way the programs works is based on the version of the antivirus program you have. Antivirus programs can be a standalone or can be included in a protection suite and are distributed in 32 and 64-bit versions on multiple operating administrations such as Windows, Linux and Mac, allowing all dif ferent types of computers to be protected from malicious software. Why is Antivirus Software Necessary?Security is a major concern when it comes to the safety of your personal information. If psyche were to access your information and use it, the consequence would be drastic. Information security is concerned with three main areasConfidentiality peoples information should only be available to someone who has the right to view it.Availability information should only be accessible when someone needs it.Integrity information should only be modified by people who are authorized to edit it.These concepts apply to home meshing users just as much as they would to any corporate or brass network. You probably wouldnt let a stranger look through your serious documents. In the same way, you may want to keep the tasks you perform on your computer mystical, whether its tracking your investments or sending email messages to family and friends. Also, you should have some assurance that the information you enter into your computer remains intact and is available when you need it. approximately security risks arise from the possibility of intentional misuse of your computer by intruders via the Internet. Others are risks that you would face even if you werent connected to the Internet (e.g. hard disk failures, theft, mogul outages). The bad news is that you probably cannot plan for e genuinely possible risk. The good news is that you can take some simple steps to reduce the line up that youll be affected by the most common threats and some of those steps help with both the intentional and accidental risks youre likely to face.Virus? What is a Virus? Before we go on and tell you how an antivirus program scans, detects and prevents viruses and malware, lets discuss what exactly a virus is. Like its genetic equivalent, a computer virus is a program that spreads unwanted and unexpected actions through the insides of your PC. Not all viruses are malicious, but many are wr itten to damage particular types of files, applications or even operating systems. Some examples of viruses are Trojan horse viruses, worms, spyware, adware, rootkits, and many other types of malware.Viruses have been around since the early 1970s. Even though they never had an internet joining back in the 70s viruses still infected computers by floppy disks. Yes, FLOPPY DISKS, the old 5 14 disks. The first recorded virus was in 1971 and it was called the creeper Virus, which was written by Bob Thomas. What the Creeper virus did was it infected a remote computer by the ARPNET and copied itself displaying the message IM THE CREEPER CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. ironically the Reaper was created to delete the Creeper. The Reaper program was not like the anti-virus programs we know today, but in fact was a virus itself in that it was self replicating and spread through a network. How an Antivirus Program WorksThe first and most important task of an antivirus program is to protect, prevent, or b lock any malicious activity in your computer or home and office network in real-time. The real-time protection should trigger an alert or provide automatic action whenever a suspected or positively set malware activity is detected. Most antivirus programs will only monitor some critical areas in your computer. When an antivirus program is installed, it will start monitoring the activity of the system by searching files that are being accessed, transferred, or stored to or from the hard disks and external/removable gets. Files that are being downloaded from the Internet are scanned. If a suspicious activity is detected, the antivirus program will automatically remove the file or stop the processes that are posing risk to your system, your contacts, or other computers or devices in on your network, un slight you trust the file that you are receiving.Antivirus programs offer several types of detection methods to identify malware, but the most common detection methods is heuristic ana lysis and by using traditional virus detection (signature-based).1. Characteristics of a program This is called heuristics scanning. Heuristic scanning engines work on the principle that viruses will usually use certain tricks or methods of infecting, and therefore if a program looks like it might be using those tricks, there is a possibility that the program is a virus. Sound simple? No, not really, its actually incredibly hard to write a foolproof 100% effective heuristics engine. (Engine, simply put, is just a word we use to describe the bit that drives the virus detector and compares files to the database of known infection agents) The more aggressive heuristic scanner may well detect large numbers of so called False Positives i.e. files that are really totally innocent but look like they might alter other files, the less aggressive ones might miss files that really are viruses. A method of heuristic analysis is for the anti-virus program to decompile the suspicious program, an d then analyze the source label contained within. In reality heuristics work quite well for some types of viruses, such as Macro Viruses, but not so well for other types. However, they are a reasonable attempt at providing protection against currently unknown viruses. The advantage to this method is the fact that there is no time period when the computer is not protected after specific viruses are released. The disadvantages include the fact that sham positives may occur and some viruses may not be identified during the length of a scan. The first heuristic engines were introduced to detect DOS viruses in 1989. However, there are now heuristic engines for nearly all classes of viruses.2. Footprint or Signature-based detection of virus program A virus signature is a particular pattern of bits or information contained in a virus that appears in no other file or program in the world, except for that virus. This method is the most common method used to identify viruses and false posi tives are very rare. It compares the virus footprint against a library of known footprints which match viruses. A footprint is a pattern in the data included in a file. Using this method, viruses must be identified as viruses, and then added to the library of footprints. The advantage to this method lies in the fact that false positives are very rare. The disadvantage to this method is the fact that there is a time period between when the virus is released to when the library of known footprints is updated. During this time period, the virus will not be recognized and could infect a computer. How do antivirus programs rate possible risk?Antivirus programs use a threat level index to determine what type of action to take. If the program is adware only, most antivirus programs will display a dialog box to inform the user why a program or link up file of an adware program was detected. If the detected object is posing security and privacy risks, the threat level is medium, high, or sev ere. The threat level ratings by antivirus programs are not all the same. Some antivirus programs may not detect or even scan for tracking cookies. Some of these are installed when legitimate software downloaded from third-party websites is bundled with another installer from a company that is known to have a spyware or adware business.Quarantine and False Positives in Antivirus ProgramsAntivirus programs work also by quarantining suspect and malware files. This process is to prevent the offend objects from doing any damage in the system and to allow the end-user to restore back a quarantined object to its original location if it is found to be a false positive.A false positive detection is when a malware signature detected an uninfected file or process. In some cases, a false positive can cause a system to not to boot or run properly. If another program is affected by the false detection, the system will run normally, but not the program that the Antivirus have falsely identified and removed.Types of Antivirus Programs That Are AvailableOn the next page there is a list, in alphabetical order, of some the companies who provide Antivirus programs and the platforms on which they are supported.CompanyWindowsAppleLinuxMobileFree?AntiVirYesNoYesNoYesAVGYesNoNoNoYesAviraYesNoYesYesYesBitDefenderYesNoYesYesNoClamWinYesNoNoNoYesESET NOD32YesNoYesYesNoF-ProtYesNoYesNoNoKasperskyYesYesYesYesNoMcAfeeYesYesYesYesNoMSEYesNoNoNoYesNetwork AssociatesYesYesYesYesNoPanda SoftwareYesNoYesNoNoRAVYesYesYesNoNoSophosYesYesYesNoNoSymantec (Norton)YesYesYesYesNoTrend MicroYesNoNoYesNoVipreYesNoNoNoNo meshworkrootYesNoNoNoNoAntivirus SoftwareNow that you have a basic understanding of how an antivirus program works and why you need one, here are some examples of three of the main antivirus programs available today. Business Of Maxis Berhard Management EssayAccording to McElhaney, CSR is a wrinkle strategy that is incorporate with core trade objectives and core competencies of the debauched, and from the outset is designed to create business value and positive affable change and is embedded in twenty-four hour period to day business culture and operations. The most researched and proven financial gain grounds of effective strategic CSR toilette be found in the argonas of human resource and talent management, write up and branding and operational cost savings.CSR is the continuous commitment by businesses to behave honourablely and contribute to the economic development while improving the quality of keep in the work force as well as the society at large. CSR is believed to have a positive relationship with a companys inviolablewill and also be a means to a more profitable operation. Some truly enlightened companies always ensure that their interest is in line with social needs and they will let this into consideration in their business planning. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) describes corporate social responsibility as a balanced approach for organizations to address economic, social and environmental issues in a way that amazes to benefit people, communities and society. (Leonard McAdam, 2003)According to Richardson ,et al., (1999), CSR behaviours can be defined as discretionary actions under run throughn by companies that are intended to get along their social issues. Joyner, et al., (2002) noted that CSR are categories of economic, legal, ethical and discretionary activities of a business entity as adapted to the values and expectations from society. They also added that, CSR are the basic expectations of the company regarding ini tiatives that take the form of protection to public health, public safety, and the environment. In this concept, they explained that values and ethics influence the extent of a corporations perceived social responsibility that is influenced by societal activities, norms or standard. In todays world, CSR can be defined as regards to all aspects of business behaviour so that the impacts of these activities are incorporated in every corporate agenda (Orgrizek, 2001 Coldwell, 2001)Factors Influencing CSRThe primary role of business is to produce goods and services that society wants and needs. According to Coldwell (2001), a business only contributes fully to a society if it is super efficient, highly profitable and has socially responsible agendas. Based on the literatures definition of CSR, CSR behaviours are not constant over time or space. Social expectations and tweet for specific types of CSR have varied over time and are contingent on the nature of the company (Richardson, Welke r Hutchinson, 1999). A study by Windsor (2001) showed that social responsibility is achieved when the corporation conforms to the prevailing norms and expectations of social performance in a given society.CSR is also influenced by the ethics of the firm or organizations. Ethical motivation can guide the business or organization to do the right thing without any external pressure or establishmental constrain. Joyner, Payne Raiborn (2002) contended that people believe businesses are amoral, when in fact they generally embrace the values of ethics in doing business. They cited several factors that serve to legitimize their position and one of the factors is society, which expects moral behaviour of the business when it cries out against immoral labour practices or environmental policies.According to Ogrizek (2001), business leaders are starting to acknowledge some of the market benefits and competitive advantages for companies who shed into place a comprehensive CSR policy. This me ans that a business with a strong stance in corporate responsibility will attract steer talent and reputation.Maxis Corporate Social ResponsibilityAny corporations business goal is to provide value and incentive to its shareholders. Therefore, profit-oriented corporations or organizations are not a beneficent organization although sometimes it is in their direct interest to support charitable activities. Furthermore, sometimes corporations or organizations carry out certain activities that governments should undertake, although they are not government agencies. It is beneficial for the corporations to carry out such socially responsible activities. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is defined as categories of economic, legal, ethical and discretionary activities of a business entity as adapted to contribute to the values and expectations of society. (Joyner, et al., 2002)CSR is also the continuing commitments by any business organization whereby they emphasize the ethical eleme nts in their management and general organizational structure (Richardson et. al, 1999). At the same time, companies are responsible for national economic development by improving the quality of life of the whole workforce and their families as well (Abbott Monsen, 1979).Maxis believe that its CSR program contributes a great amount to societal development as advances in technologies can bring direct benefit to communities. As Malaysias leading mobile telecommunications operator, the company is committed to supporting national aspirations on areas of education, technology and youth. (Maxis, 2012)CSR involves various aspects such as economic factors, legal requirements, ethical orders and discretionary demands. In this high-tech era, business environments are susceptible to changes in these factors. In order to be a leading mobile telecommunication provider, severally firm must be fully aware and sensitive to the impact of these factors. The effect of these factors may add to the fi rms corporate image and financial performance. (Mohamed Sawandi, 2007)The Maxis Bridging Communities (MBC) was launched in 2002 with the aim of enriching communities with access to education opportunities through information communication technology. MBC has taken a firm commitment to ensure stronger and sustainable programs by developing key initiatives inBridging the digital gapEducation and development of MalaysiansEmployee VolunteerismEnvironmentCSR actually portrays the image of the firm itself. It shows what the company has done to fulfil its corporate duty to ensure the firm is not only good in providing the service but also plays its roles by contributing something to the community (Tilt, 1994). In order to have a good relationship with the community, the firm should do something beneficial for the community. Within the company itself, there is also a platform for social contribution especially to the employees. For example, in Maxis intercourse Berhad, there are a lot of privileges that have been provided to the staff such as medical treatment, advantages in communication services, increment of salary and etc.

Handy (1986) believes that it is these last two forms of culture, role and task, which are closely oft found in organizations. Handys categorization of eccentric persons of culture is useful for giving a picture of distinguishable organizational cultures. It serves to highlight both the difficulty of clearly be cultures and the profound implications of the cultural approach to organizations.Organizational Values basis help employees find meaning and purpose in their twist and link their individual efforts to those of the entire company. Our culture is the theatre in which we play out our lives. It is a major part of who we are. Robbins (1989) describes the culture of an organization as performing a number of functions within the organization as follows1.It provides a boundary defining role separating one organiz ation from another.2. It conveys a sense of identity.3. It enhances social system stability. Culture is the social glue that helps take on the organization together.4. They know how to harness the creative power of their workforce to develop new products and services. Creativity, however, is as much a matter of technique as intelligence.2.Be able to understand strategic leadership styles.2.1 Evaluate the relationship between strategic management and leadership.Strategic management is the art of managing employees in a way that maximizes the potential of achieving your business objectives. undecomposed managers instigate with a in- someone agenda and use their leadership skills to spread it throughout the organisation. One of the important aspect in strategic managemement is Evaluation and control. It consists of instruction execution data and activity reports .The information must be relevant to what is beingness monitored, one of the barriers to impressive control is the difficulty in developing appropriate measures of important activities and output.Leadership has been described as the process of social influence in which one person c an instruction on the aid and maintain of others in the accomplishment of a common task.Managers have subordinatesBy definition, managers have subordinates unless their surname is honorary and given as a mark of seniority, in which case the title is a misnomer and their power over others is other than formal authority. supercilious, transactional styleManagers have a position of authority vested in them by the company, and their subordinates work for them and largely do as they are told. Management style is transactional, in that the manager tells the subordinate what to do, and the subordinate does this not because they are a blind robot, but because they have been promised a reward (at minimum their salary) for doing so.Work taperManagers are paid to get things done (they are subordinates too), often within tight constraints of time and money. They thus of course pass on this work focus to their subordinates.Seek comfortAn inte confronting research finding about managers is t hat they tend to come from stable home backgrounds and light-emitting diode relatively normal and comfortable lives. This leads them to be relatively risk-averse and they will look outk to avoid conflict where possible. In terms of people, they generally like to run a happy ship.Leaders have fol write downsLeaders do not have subordinates at least not when they are leading. Many organizational leaders do have subordinates, but only because they are also managers. But when they want to lead, they have to give up formal authoritarian control, because to lead is to have followers, and next is unceasingly a voluntary activity.Charismatic, transformational styleTelling people what to do does not inspire them to follow you. You have to appeal to them, showing how following them will lead to their hearts desire. They must want to follow you enough to stop what they are doing and perhaps walk into danger and situations that they would not normally consider risking.People focusAlthough m any leaders have a charismatic style to some extent, this does not require a loud in-personity. They are always good with people, and quiet styles that give credit to others (and takes blame on themselves) are precise effective at creating the loyalty that great leaders engender.2.2 Evaluate the leadership styles and their impact on decision making.Leadership StylesRao (1986) has classified the leadership styles, on the basis of the earlier research at the Indian Institute of Management, into the followingA Benevolent or Paternalistic leadership style in which the top train manager believes that all his employees should be perpetually guided treated with esteem like a parent treats his children, is relationship oriented, assigns tasks on the basis of his own likes and dislikes, constantly guides them and protects them, understands their needs, salvages the situations of crisis by active involvement of himself, distributes rewards to those who are loyal and obedient, shares info rmation with those who are close to him, etcA full of life leadership style is characterized as closer to Theory X belief pattern where the manager believes that employees should be closely and constantly supervised, directed and reminded of their duties and responsibilities, is short term goal oriented, cannot tolerate mistakes or conflicts among employees, personal power dominated, keeps all information to himself, working strictly according to norms and rules and regulations and is highly subject oriented.A developmental leadership style is characterized as an empowering style, where the top manager believes in developing the competencies of his staff, treats them as mature adults, leaves them on their own around of the times, is long term goal oriented, shares information with all to build their competencies, facilitates the resolution of conflicts and mistakes by the employees themselves with minimal involvement from him. developmental style by nature seems to be the near ly desired organization building style. However some individuals and some situations require at times benevolent and critical styles. Some managers are not informed of the pre supreme style they tend to use and the effects their style is producing on their employees.ResultsRelationship between Leadership Style and Subordinate Feelings and ReactionsThe coefficients of correlational statisticss obtained between the three leadership styles taking into account all the niner situation and the six type of feelings or s police squady climate generated by each of styles is presented belowBenevolent styleBenevolent or paternalistic style was correlated with feelings of loyalty and dependence of subordinates on the manger. (r = 0.51)Benevolent style was also related to feelings of dislike for the boss and aim to avoid work ( r = 54)Benevolent style was negatively related to feelings of development, empowerment, ontogenesis and independent thinking ( r = -0.5), learning (r = -0.4), espri t de corps (r= -0.5) and satisfaction (r = -0.4)These bespeak that those who are close to the leader develop dependency on him/her while those who are not close to him/her develop resentment and other associated negative feelings.Critical StyleCritical style highly and positively related to resentment and dislike for the boss and work (r = 0.75)It was moderately and positively correlated with dependency and personal loyalty (r = 0.47)It was negatively correlated with empowerment and growth (r = -0.6), learning (r= -0.5), morale (r= -0.6) and satisfaction (r = 0.6)These indicate hat critical style also is not a desirable in general and leads to disastrous consequences.Development al StyleDevelopmental style was positively related to empowerment, growth and independence (r = 0.73), learning (r = 0.77), morale (r = 0.85) and satisfaction (r = 0.84)It was negatively correlated with dependence (r= -0.4) and feelings of resentment or dislike for the boss or work (r= -0.7)The findings ma ke it clear that developmental style is the most desired style in terms of creation of a growth oriented, developmental, and learning culture. These data indicate that it is the developmental style that creates most positive emotional climate. This is in very similar to the findings of McClelland on the characteristics of an Intuitional Leader.Relationship between situational style and the overall styleItem total correlations were computed between each of the items and the overall style across all the nine styles. These can be categorized in a variety of ways, each using different methods, techniques and tools to accomplish the same result of providing direction, implementing plans and motivating a group. Each leadership style will have varying degrees of suc cess in different situations and their effective use will also depend on the personality and personal skills of the leader involved.Leadership styles are commonly divided into 3 major typesAuthoritarian Or AutocraticLeaders using this style will have total authority over any decision making and will fundamentally tell their followers what needs to be done and how the tasks should does have its place and its uses it is particularly effective when time is limited, such as in an medical emergency, when it is vital for someone to take charge and prevent any chaos or confusion. It is also good for groups that need close supervision and would not necessarily have much useful to contribute to any decision-making process, such as when dealing with young children or very inexperienced employees. This style can also work well in a normal workplace setting if your employees already well-bonded and well-motivated and have trust in you as their leader. However, it is not generally recommended to use the domineering style all the time as this can lead to loss of motivation from followers, as resentment builds. This is particularly true when dealing with creative employees and team players, who may be keen to participate in the decision-making processes.Participative or DemocraticThis lovely of style prioritizes team participation and because each member isallowed to contribute his/her ideas and feels that their excitant is considered seriously, there is increased employee satisfaction and ownership. The democratic leader will listen to his groups ideas and give them fair consideration, although the ultimate authority for the decision will still rest with him. This style is often used in the workplace when the leader has some of the information needed and the employees have the other necessary parts, so that a break away decision can only be taken when everyones input is considered. It is oddly effective when you have knowledgeable and skilled employees. However, one draw back of this leadership style is that it can make it difficult to make quick decisions when time is short or there is an immediate urgency to a problem.Delegative Or Free ReignThis leadership style is also often called laissez-faire leadership, meaning that followers are effectively given free reign to make decisions and do what they think is appropriate. There is no continuous supervision or feedback from theleader to the group. Although this sounds risky, this leadership style can work if team members are highly-experienced and require little supervision to achieve the expect outcome. It is also useful because a leader isnt always able to do everything and often needs to delegate certain tasks, therefore, this style of leadership works well if the leader is able to trust and have confidence in the abilities of the people below him/her.Leadership Styles In Real LifeIn reality, most good leaders will use a combination of these main 3 types of leadership styles to achieve the best re sult in each specific situation. Naturally, one style may be more dominant or more often used than others, due to the leaders personality and personal skills, but often, the situation and milieu will also dictate which style is more suitable. In some cases, all three styles may be used at the same time such as a leader informing the group that a current procedure is not acceptable and that a new one needs to be established (autocratic), then asking for their ideas in creating a new procedure (democratic) before finally delegating certain tasks to different team members, for the implementation of the new procedure (delegative).3.Be able to secure achievment of organization involvment and objectives through strategic leadership.3.1 Develop a culture of professionalism, mutual trust , obligingness and support within the organization.Matching individuals to organizations is a crucial part of success for any company. The match between people and the companies for which they work is det ermined by the kind of organizational culture that exists.A culture of professionalism is essential for the progress of any organization. The degree to which an organizations values match the values of an individual who works for the company determines whether a person is a good match for a particular organization. The collective rules by which an organization operates define its culture. These rules are formed by shared behaviors, values and beliefs. Culture forms the basis for how individuals operate within the context of the organization. In large organizations, vision statements, mission statements and statements of values are often formalized to describe the companys culture. On the most basic level, culture is observable as a set of behaviors. Examples of culture at this level include the degree of formality with which employees conduct themselves, the organizations dress code, and the type of technology used. Beneath the level of observable behaviors are the values that underl ie behavior. Though these values determine behavior, they cannot be directly observed. At an even deeper level are the assumptions and beliefs that determine values. art object an organization or individuals values may remain within awareness and can be stated, assumptions and beliefs often exist at a lower place the surface and out of conscious awareness.Being aware of an organizations culture at all levels is important because the culture defines appropriate and inappropriate behavior. In some cultures, for example, creativity is stressed. In others, the status quo is valued. Some cultures are more socially oriented, while others are task-oriented. In some companys teamwork is key. In others, individual achievement is encouraged and valued. An organizations culture also determines the way in which employees are rewarded. Management tends to focus on a dominant source of motivation, such as pay, status, or opportunity for personal growth and achievement. The accessibility of man agement and the ways in which decisions are made are reflections of an organizations culture as well.It is important for individual values to match organizational culture because a culture of shared meaning or purpose results in actions that help the organization achieve a common or collective goal. An organization will operate more productively as a whole when key values are shared among the majority of its members. To that end, employees need to be comfortable with the behaviors encouraged by the organization so that individual motivation and group productivity remain high. High functioning organizations are comprised of individuals whose overt behaviors are consistent with their covert values. All of this is of crucial importance to managers. Senior executives usually set the tone by exerting core values that form the overall dominant culture shared by the majority of an organizations members. So, if management does not take the time to understand the culture that motivates an org anization, problems are inevitable. New procedures and activities will be very difficult to implement if they do not mesh with the organizations cultureSteps to ensure that individual are responsive to the goals and operating procedure of the organization start with the hiring process. Managers can foster the development of a positive culture by employing people who share the same values and vision that the organization represents. To do this, employers can spend time with prospects before they enter the organization as new employees. Once new hires are indoctrinated with the organizations values, they will form an objective perception of the environment that will solidify the organizations personality or culture2 Evaluate the impact of a strategic leaders clear focuss in leading the organization in the achievement of objectives. The benefits of good organisational skills in a leader will performance of the workforce.. An effective leader will be able to steer a course around and thr ough these challenges leading to successful implementation of service improvements. Leaders must have a clear understanding of both the formal and informal aspects of their organization as well as all their responsibilities for strategic development and change management. Then they will be able to get the most out of the organization and its workforce. The formal organisation includes the hierarchy and accountability arrangements, information systems, committee structure and meetings, employment and pay issues. The informal features include relationships, the kinds of behaviours that are expected and reward, communication, distribution of power and how conflicts are handled. The development of a learning culture is a practical measure to enable the work force to regularly nicety their skills and knowledge and address their organisations objectives through their delivery of high quality services. The destructive influence of hiring someone who does not share the same set of values, go als and commitment assiduous by the organization will weaken a strong chain of links and bonds. An employees performance depends on what is and what is not proper among his or her peers, which in turn affects that individuals behavior and motivation to participate and contribute within the organizational framework. An effective means of keeping employees aligned with the values and goals of an organization is by developing a culture that encourages employees to focus on a higher purpose for their work. Values that support this kind of cohesive operation include the idea that people Creating an environment where people enjoy and value their work is key. To do this effectively, leaders must be sure to notify clear expectations for every member of the organization. These expectations should be back up by the words and actions of managers who regularly let people know how their work is important to the organization. Individuals should be given assignments that are consistent with the ir strengths and interests, and opportunities for continued learning and growth should be provided as well.Strategic leader provides the vision, direction, the purpose for growth, and context for the success of the corporation. The two important parts of strategic achievement are formulation and implementation. While both parts are essential to achieving superior organizational performance, the implementing strategy is where most companies succeed or fail. Strategic skills are necessary in golf-club to define and achieve specific goals and objectives. Strategic thinking involves the ability to identify a relevant desired state, assess the starting state, and then establish and journey the appropriate path of transition states required to reach the desired state. A key element of effective strategic thinking is determining which operators and operations will most efficiently and effectively influence and move the present state in the direction of the desired state.Successful leaders know and accept themselves and are able to be present in someone elses world without judgement. They are people who see linkages and trends in situations, to trust themselves, and are able to think multi-dimensionally, being focused and expansive at the same time. They can manage ambiguity, they can enter a situation at any point, easily cope with future requirements.Another level of process involves the strategies, skills and capabilities by which the organisation or individual selects and directs actions within their environment i.e. how they generate and guide their behaviours within a particular context. For an individual, capabilities include cognitive strategies and skills such as learning, memory, decision making and creativity, which facilitate the performance of a particular behaviour or task. On an organisational level, capabilities relate to the infrastructures available to support communication, innovation, planning and decision making between members of the organisation .3.3 Analyze how strategic leader support and develop understanding of the organizations direction.Leadership is an interactive process, the collective energy of a group, organization, or nation is focused on the attainment of a common objective or goal. Through leadership, clarity of purpose, direction, and means is achieved. There is also a perception of shared commitment by members. However, leadership tasks at the top of a large scale organization are different from those at lower levels because the nature of work changes as an individual moves up through the hierarchy of an organizationThe major functions performed by progressively higher levels of the organization are increasingly indirect, complex, and ill-defined. The lower levels deal with well- understood procedures. The resource requirements are modest, and expectations of performance are clear. Leadership is direct leaders are expected to influence the course of events by their own actions. At higher levels, requirements are less clear, problems are less defined, and there are situations where developed procedures or precedents do not exist. Leaders at higher levels must be creative in problem solving, more innovative in their thinking. They must also be more proactive, in the sense of looking further forward more perceptively to set directions that play out over long periods.Organizational leaders may influence several hundred to several thousand people. They do this indirectly, generally through more levels of subordinates than do direct leaders. The additional levels of subordinates can make it more difficult for them to see results. Organizational leaders have staffs to help them lead their people and manage their organizations resources. They establish policies and the organizational climate that support their subordinate leaders.Organizational leadership skills differ from direct leadership skills in degree, but not in kind. That is, the skill domains are the same, but organizational leaders must deal with more complexity, more people, greater uncertainty, and a greater number of unintended consequences. They find themselves influencing people more through policymaking and systems integration than through face-to-face contact.Organizational leadersfocus on planning and mission accomplishment over the next two to ten years.Getting out of their offices and visiting the parts of their organizations where the work is done is especially important for organizational leaders. They must make time to get to the field to compare the reports their staff gives them with the actual conditions their people face and the perceptions of the organization and mission they hold. strategical LEADERSHIPStrategic leaders are generally responsible for large organizations and may influence several thousand to hundreds of thousands of people. They establishorganizational structure, allocate resources, and communicate strategic vision.Strategic leaders work in an uncertain environment on highly c omplex problems that affect and are affected by events and organizations impertinent their own.Strategic leaders apply many of the same leadership skills and actions they mastered as direct and organizational leaders however, strategic leadership requires others that are more complex and indirectly applied.Strategic leaders, like direct and organizational leaders, process information quickly, assess alternatives based on incomplete data, make decisions, and generate support. However, strategic leaders decisions affect more people, commit more resources, and have wider-ranging consequences in both space and time than do decisions of organizational and direct leaders.3.4 Discuss how strategic leadership styles are adapted to meet changing needs, and to enable organizational development and commitment. In order to determine what the effective leadership styles are, it is essential to have a basic understanding of what leadership is.Various Types of Leadership StylesYou may discover tha t some of the following are effective leadership styles that you can use in managing people.Charismatic LeadershipSome believe that charisma is inborn. This is the characteristic of a person who inspires without trying very hard. He or she appears to have a natural ability at leading others. This is such a leadership style that can inspire others. This is usually associated with demagogues. Charismatic leaders need to focus on leading others to attain the objectives of the organization. If they are not careful, this ability may go to their heads.Participative LeadershipThis style is important in making teams work effectively. The leader is both leader and active participant.Contingency leadershipThis is the type of leadership where plans are made in taking care of any possibility that something may go wrong. Risk management is part of this.Autocratic Leadership styleThis involves use of position, power and authority. Simply put, What I say is the law

The Politics Behind a Magazine :: Media

The Politics Behind a MagazineThe Progressive is a magazine that was started in 1909. Mathew Rothschild, who was the editor of the transnational Monitor a Ralph Nader founded magazine, is the current editor of the magazine. The evidence of this magazine being liberal is found by taking into account the overall visual design, the emplacement on arguments of the articles, and the political stances of the authors that are published. In glancing through The Progressive and observing it visually a reader can gather a political tie-up from its advertisements and pictures. The picture, which is seen on the cover of the magazines, is a depiction of an article out of the magazine. For instance, in the 2001 Jan. issue the cover accounting is Aristide, Again and the picture shows a Haitian existence with a marked thumb signifying that he has voted with the slums crowded with people as the understate. Along with the world the U.S. does not approve of putting him back in government agency but for most Haitians, which are poor, he is the only one who is for the poor. Some of the advertisements in the magazine were books that appealed to people wanting to read about making a change such as the one trying to sale The Magnificent Activist that claimed the author was A Radical in His Era A impractical in Ours (The Progressive 40). There is a section in the magazine called On the Line which houses a collection of small articles that have pictures which stand for the story they are telling and of them was an article called Striptease for the Trees. In this articles picture a women is radically protesting the clear cutting of Californias centenarian Redwood Trees by standing in the middle of the road bare-chested in front of the logging trucks stopping their passage. From the advertisements and the covers eye catching artistic originality to the many pictures for the articles in the magazine a stance for the left side is portrayed. The articles that are published in The Progressive illustrate the views of liberal authors through the topics they pick and the argument they use. When the background of the authors are checked and what they stand for is assessed then a political slant can be assumed on the magazine for choosing them.

Feminimity and Masculinity in Trifles by Susan Glaspell Essays -- Trif

Feminimity and Masculinity in Trifles by Susan GlaspellWorks Cited Not IncludedTrifles, a one-act lend, written by Susan Glaspell, has an interesting plot about an abusive preserve?s murder at the hands of his abused wife on a secluded farm in the Midwest (Russell, pg. 1). The opening scene of the play gives us a great deal of information about the mass of the play and their opinions. The play portrays the ways in which custody treated women during this time period. The men in the reading reflected a male-oriented society, which caused the women feelings of repression and unappreciation. Throughout the play the actions of Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Hale, and Mrs. Peters resemble that of Greek mythology, where three sisters controlled the fate of men (Russell, pg. 1).The setting in which the majority of the action takes hind end is the kitchen. The room is described as ? a gloomy kitchen?-unwashed pans under the sink, a loaf of bread outside the bread- recession, a dish-towel on the tab le-and other signs of uncompleted whole shebang?(Roberts and Jones, pg.1150). This description should alert the reader immediately that something is wrong. In the time when this play was taking place, the woman?s sole responsibility was to keep the house in order. Everything I have read from this time period has portrayed the house as a very clean and organized place for the man to drive home to. It was supposed to be a place for rest and relaxation. The fact that Mrs. Wright?s kitchen was in such disarray, symbolizes that something was troubling her. In the paragraph describing the scene it is told that the people entered the kitchen in the order of the sheriff, the county attorney, and Hale. The sheriff?s wife and Mrs. Hale followed behind the men, entering last... ...h some of her own. ?Mrs. Hale symbolically claims her position as the person who spins the thread of life,? (Russell, pg. 1) relating brook to Greek mythology. When the men continue to joke about Mrs. Wright ?s intention ?to quilt or just knot? it evokes a defensive response in Mrs. Hale which seems to warn them not to tempt fate. The play ends with the women leaving the house without conveying what they had learned to the men. They felt justified in making a last not to tell because of the condescending attitudes of the men. Their choice was to do what was legally right and report their findings, or to conceal the truth and vindicate all women (Kearns, pg. 1). Mrs. Hale snatches the box from Mrs. Peters and puts it in the pocket of her big coat to conceal it. The women have no intentions of revealing their finds, and seem to protect Mrs. Wright to the end.
